Course Details

This part time free-standing qualification is particularly suitable if you are interested in teaching and want a short qualification that does not have a minimum teaching requirement, or if you have just started a teaching role. It can also give you a 'taster' of teaching if you are unsure about whether teaching is for you.

The certificate is worth 20 credits at Level 5 on the Certificate in Education or PGCE (Education and Training) framework and is also equivalent to the first module of the Certificate in Education and PGCE (Education and Training), allowing you to progress onto a full teaching qualification at a later date if you choose to. You will need to undertake bridging activity and secure a placement with the assistance of your tutor.

It will give you a clear picture of the knowledge and skills required for teaching, learning and assessing in the Further Education and Skills sector.

3 hours per week for 10 weeks

The Preparatory Certificate is primarily for those wishing to work in job roles including trainer, assessor, instructor, demonstrator, mentor, and pastoral mentor. Institutions have their own qualification requirements and you are advised to check with your employer as to whether this target qualification is suitable for your current/future role or if you will need the full PGCE/Cert Ed.

This qualification does not confer QTS.  If you progress to successfully complete the full PGCE or Certificate in Education, you can then apply for QTLS status through the Education and Training Foundation. You will need have QTS to be employed as a qualified teacher in a secondary school, academy or free school.

Whilst the Certificate in Education and Training, Preparatory does not qualify you to teach, it can be used to help you to progress towards further awards (Certificate in Education or PGCE (Education and Training)).
